Who is a Preschooler? Generally children in the age group of 3 to 5 years come in the category of a preschooler. Parents love to see their children grow and develop on many aspects like physically, emotionally and mentally. Every single day is a new learning for them as they find their identity at home within family, relatives and friends, community as well as school. Following this, there has to be some criteria to keep a watch on the development pace of preschoolers. What could be they?
There are some specific skills that children acquire at this age and one of them is Motor Skills. It plays an important role in shaping the ability of a child to play and enjoy individually. In this age group, many children naturally try to imitate the actions of their parents and other grownups they see. Hence the development of motor skills is essential to instill confidence in them. Parents can check in general if at all their child is able to change the dress, tear paper, stick paper, hold food ( fine motor skills) and able to pedal a bicycle or kick a ball ( gross motor skills).
Laughter is one of the best ways to make a child feel emotionally stable and positive. Feeling amused at looking at something unusual and funny is a positive emotion that needs to be developed adequately in the child. A child at the preschool age should be able to laugh at very simple comic expressions, funny pictures and faces, cartoons, character imitations. Humor is often seen as a sign of social intelligence in the child and a child easily finds acceptance in school and community who loves humor and looks out for it.
Another important benchmark in assessing a child’s development pace is his ability to follow instruction. It gives an idea of the child’s developing listening skills, comprehending skills as well as behavioral skills. Instructions are the first step towards direct communication of the child with people around. If simple instructions like ‘Sit, Stand, Eat, Come, Go, No, Open and Shut’ are followed well, it is a good sign of the child’s readiness to learn new things in school.
Along with listening skills, speaking or communicating skills are very important. Their adequate development is necessary as it goes long way in making the child feel an edge over his peers. The thumb rule says that if any stranger is able to understand even 75% of what your child says, then he is good to go. The pace of speech development is just right. But if at all the tongue twists in saying even the basic words like papa, mumma, food and so on the child can be consulted to a speech therapist for complete assurance.
Before acquiring reading and writing skills, children first learn through pictures and flashcards. Hence colors, characters, posters play an important role in enhancing the vivid imagination of the child creating a lasting memory of what they learn. If a child gets fascinated by colors, designs and colorful prints, it’s a good sign of the child’s ability to learn through colors.
The Preschool age is the time when a child learns new things daily and one of the key areas is food. Multi-color food with adequate nutrition is essential to keep the child focused and full of energy. The child should be able to try new solids (fruits, vegetables) through interesting recipes to fulfill his daily nutrition requirement. A child having interest to try different types of food learns the art of staying independent.
Learning in preschool age are more practical and activities based rather than write and explain method. To excel a preschooler needs to be physically active so as to explore more and more things and learn through observations. Love for play, choice of toy and activity sets, interest in group play should be checked for to find out if a child developed adequate physical mobility or not.
At the end, there may be many other parameters to assess development of a preschooler. Time and surrounding environment play an important role in grooming the child. Some may simply learn late but there is a chance that when the skills develop they are better than the rest.
